Short-Striking Trout

Trout are notorious for short-striking top water baits. Here's a little trick that should help combat this problem.

Take about 18" of mono and tie a weighted fly, like a Clouser Minnow, to the back hook of your top water bait. This combination may sound strange but it works.

The addition of the fly will not impede the action of that top water bait, which you're still going to catch fish on. But, what's really nice about this rig is if a fish does swing and misses up top you still have the fly as a backup that they'll rarely refuse.
