Straightening Heavy Mono Leaders
During Tarpon season, we use a lot of heavy monofilament as leader material. 60, 80, and 100 lbs test mono has a memory and will usually take the shape of the spool it came off of. If you're using a leader that looks like a SLINKIE it's not going to allow your fly or plug to work properly. Here's a quick and easy way to straighten out, your leader material. First, cut maybe 8 to 10 leaders, to the length you desire. Next, take those leaders and drop them in a pot of boiling water and watch them uncurl. After the leaders have straightened, pull them out of the water and slide them in a piece of ¾ inch PVC pipe. The leaders will cool and stay straight in the pipe, and the next time you need one, you just whip it out and it's ready to go. Back |
