12 Fathom Slam'rs

12 FATHOM SLAM'Rs are one of the most versatile baits on the market today and should be a part of every flats anglers arsenal. Not only can they be rigged in a number of different ways, but almost ever fish that frequents the flats will eat them.

The most popular way to rig this lure is "Texas style" with a 4/0 or 5/0 weedless worm hook. This style of rigging is perfect for fishing shallow grass flats, mangrove shorelines, oyster bars and around docks and pilings. If you want your SLAM'R to sink a little faster and still stay weedless, insert a 1" paneling nail into the body of the lure. This bait can also be rigged with a floating jig head for irresistible top water action, which works great for Redfish or with a standard weighted jig head for species in deeper water.

When it comes to working these lures, Trout in potholes and Snook along the mangroves seem to prefer a slow twitching action. If you're fishing dock lights for Snook, also work the bait slow but make sure you keep in near the surface. Schooling Redfish are competitive feeders and want the SLAM'R moving at a faster pace. Tailing Reds on the other hand will spook if the bait is presented to quickly so just slither it along the bottom as slowly as possible. And for Tarpon in the shadow lines of bridges, cast the bait upcurrent and let it drift with very little action in front of them.
